I would first like to start off by saying I am not a cold, obnoxious person who is not bothered by death. I can empathize with Michael Jackson’s family during this time because the loss of a loved one is extremely difficult. I do, however, have a HUGE problem with the “fan” response to his recent death.
While I can appreciate the loss of a pop icon so unexpectedly is, for lack of a better term, traumatic for some, there is no reason this woman should be clutching a wax figurine in tears. Did she personally know Michael Jackson? Doubtful. So why this overdramatic response?
Over the last twenty-four hours, there have been hundreds of videos and blogs dedicated to Michael Jackson’s memorial and fans speaking about how this loss has personally affected their lives. I just can’t wrap my mind around most of the reactions. I have selected a few that I find to be ridiculous and posted my corresponding response:
“I’m going to miss all of his songs”. My response to all those who are feeling this way: HIS MUSIC STILL EXISTS. Try looking on iTunes, its all there. And hey, if you loved him so much to be moved to tears by his death, why don’t you own copies of all of his CD’s?
“It’s really sad-It’s show business”. Oh, so people who are not in show business do not die suddenly? Whew, that’s a relief! This doesn’t even make sense. It’s show business? Uh, no, its cardiac arrest.
“Police had to put up barricades by Jackson’s star on the Walk of Fame because thousands crowded the star after hearing of his death”. News flash: When famous people die, their soul does not magically transfer to their Walk of Fame star. You are not any closer to him by being there. If you feel like you owe him that visit, try not to trample all over Farrah Fawcett’s star—she’s had enough for one day, what with Michael Jackson stealing her death thunder and all.
“I was just listening to his music, to ‘Thriller,’ yesterday on my iPod,” said Radnia, 21. “And now this. It’s surreal.” Yes, I too believe that if I listen to music and watch television and movies, those celebrities will magically become immortal highlanders. I mean, WTF? Did an adult of sound mind actually say that?
In short, hate me if you want to hate me, it’s just how I feel. It doesn’t really have everything to do with Michael Jackson, it’s more so related to how “fans” react to “celebrity” deaths. Like I said, I feel empathy for his family and it is a sad situation, but I did not know him personally.
I can’t wait for the hate mail to start pouring in…
